The Canals of Britain must have been a life's work to research and it would take almost as long to cruise all the waterways described. A very detailed and comprehensive guide, if slightly downgraded from the 'complete guide' promised in the publicity, this 300 page publication is intended to be of interest to all users of the canal network and majors on their construction, history and architecture.
There is occasional reference to the time necessary to lock through a particular flight of locks but in general navigation instructions, depths and headrooms are omitted. Details of shoreside facilities are also scant but there is frequent mention of riverside hostelries where real ale is available. Some of the details are a few years out of date but this is not surprising given the extensive and detailed nature of the work.
Colour and monochrome photographs liberally illustrate the guide, along with sketch diagrams of each waterway. Anyone with an interest in Britain's canals, as well as those who travel them by boat, will find this an attractive and engaging addition to the coffee-table.
